Week 35 – weaning progress

Things have been going pretty well on the weaning front for Reindeer. He’s managing with lots of different foods now and is eating plenty!

Yesterday, I decided to give him a bowl with some food in it to see how he coped. Rather than putting the spoon in or throwing the bowl (which is what I expected to happen) he actually tried to use the bowl like a big cup – putting it to his lips to drink from.

I was surprised at first but then realised this made perfect sense – the bowl is of a similar shape to a cup and isn’t much bigger. Since I’ve been teaching Reindeer to use a cup the normal way (no child lid on it) it is fairly logical that he’d approach his bowl the same way too.

Today he wasn’t too fussed about the bowl and it did end up on the floor, but I guess that’s all part of the learning that is weaning. It will be a few months yet before he is proficient!

Everything he’s eaten so far is either mashed into small pieces or provided as finger food for him to learn to chew. Some of the foods he’s been eating so far are:

  • Veg: carrot, parsnip, yam, potato, cauliflower, broccoli, courgette, swede
  • Fruit: banana, pear, cucumber, mango, avocado, papaya
  • Combinations: scrambled egg, cod in cheese sauce, vegetables in cheese or white sauce, courgette gratin, porridge, bananas and cinnamon, yam with orange
  • Shop-prepared: organix carrot, tomato and sweetcorn bites, rusk (with an additional smear of peanut butter), fruit pots (apple & mango, apple & strawberry, apple & raspberry), petit filou (strawberry)

I feel that this is quite a varied diet and I’m pleased that he hasn’t really rejected any food yet. Hopefully things will continue to be positive!
